Star Wars J.J. Abrams Shares First Photo From The Set Of Episode IX

There's no franchise quite as popular as Star Wars. Starting decades ago, George Lucas' colorful world has been passed down across generations, resulting in a massive pool of devoted fans to the galaxy far, far away. So when J.J. Abrams and Disney brought back the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it broke box office records and help inspire a new trilogy to complete the Skywalker legacy. Abrams is back to direct Episode IX, wrapping up stories and characters he originally introduced. The director/producer just shared the first image on set, and it's cryptic and exciting. Check it out.

Does anyone else have chills? This new image, however out of focus, proves that Episode IX has officially begun production. And considering how high the stakes are in the wake of The Last Jedi, there's a ton to explore in this final installment in the main Star Wars franchise.

The above image is mostly focused on the camera recording the image, but it also features some awesome Star Wars iconography in the background. If you look closely, it seems that Abrams is filming a scene from within the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. This is a common setting for the beloved space opera, so most fans will easily be able to make up the Falcon's cockpit in this first photo.

Not just an empty set, there are two actors filming within the iconic ship. Unfortunately, only one character is clearly visible: John Boyega's Finn. Finn is one of the trio of new heroes created by J.J. Abrams, and he's had a trial by fire in The Resistance. If Episode IX has a time gap after The Last Jedi, then it should be interesting to see how he's continued to fight against the First Order. Has he become a Han Solo, thrown into heroics before going above and beyond? We'll just have to wait and see.

Regardless of the film's mystery plot, J.J. Abrams' first set photo of Episode IX also shows that Finn finally found a new outfit. The former Stormtrooper spent his first two films rocking basics and Poe Dameron's jacket, but he's got new duds in the above image. Instead he's rocking a sweet vest combo-- once again reminiscent of Harrison Ford's Han Solo.

As far as whose next to John Boyega, smart money says its Daisy Ridley's Rey. Rey is the owner of the Millennium Falcon now, and she's not going to give Han's ship over easily. Finn and Rey spent the entirety of The Last Jedi separated, before finally coming together in the film's final moments. With J.J. Abrams back in the director chair, smart money says Finn and Rey's relationship will once again become a focus of the narrative.

As it exists, James Wan's Aquaman offers fans dynamite live-action adaptations of two of the titular hero's key antagonists: Orm (Patrick Wilson) and Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). These iconic villains are treated well in the new blockbuster, but if the movie had been made based on early drafts, they would have been joined by a few other notable comic book rogues, as I learned recently speaking with the movie's writers. Asked about DC characters who flirted with making their debut in Aquaman, Will Beall explained,

There were a few Aquaman villains that appeared in a prison break sequence, but I don't think there were any other major characters.

I spoke with Will Beall, David Leslie Johnson, and Geoff Johns over the phone earlier this month to talk about their work on Aquaman, and I could help but dig deeper when I learned about the prison break sequences that was almost written into the movie. While it was only something that was a part of the blockbuster in its earliest stages, just imagining what it could have been is definitely fun to think about.

After Will Beall briefly mentioning it in his answer to my question about including more DC characters, I followed up asking how the prison break sequence was going to fit into the movie. Apparently it was going to squeeze in shortly after the first real confrontation between Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and King Orm (Patrick Wilson). Arthur was going to lose the battle and be imprisoned, and during that stint behind bars get to meet a few baddies that comic book readers would recognize. Said the writers:

Will Beall: I think immediately after, The Ring of Fire, the gladiatorial arena, Arthur was going to be thrown into basically an Atlantian supermax in the bowels of the city. So he's in general population with all these hideous monsters and guys that close students of the DC universe would recognize as Aquaman villains. And there was a prison break.David Leslie Johnson: The guards were like shark men, and Arthur cuts one of them, and the blood drives them all into a feeding frenzy.

Those who have seen the film know that this is definitely a big change from the way that things play out in the finished cut. While this early draft of Aquaman had the hero losing to Orm in gladiator combat and being thrown in jail, the whole situation ultimately changed to see Arthur rescued at the last minute by Mera (Amber Heard), leading to a chase sequence with the duo trying to get out of Atlantis.

The way things play out in the film is great, but it still would have been great to see the prison break sequence as it had been planned -- if not just for all the teases of potential threats in the future of the Aquaman series/the DC Extended Universe. As for why it wound up getting cut from the movie, the writers simply said that it existed as one big action sequence too many (presumably the escape from Atlantis would have been an addendum to the prison break). In their own words:

David Leslie Johnson: It was cool, just too much.Will Beall: We had a lot of big sequences. That one went away pretty early.

Adding his two cents to the conversation, Geoff Johns added that he thought the direction taken by the script was a smart one. In his opinion it would have been unwise to totally flood Aquaman with an abundance of comic book characters, regardless of the size of their role. The movie was made to allow the eponymous superhero take center stage, and he believes that's exactly what the film ultimately does. Said Johns,

I think that was a decision these guys made early on, and I think was a smart one. They let him, let Arthur have his own movie.

In addition to Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Aquaman co-stars Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, and Nicole Kidman, and is now in theaters everywhere.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Mortal Engines Ticket

Readers, start your Mortal Engines! It's time to revisit one of this month's would-be blockbusters, and the film most likely to draw in folks that can't make it to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Another YA franchise looks to make itself into a fixture at the movies, and it's bringing along an old friend for the ride as well. We're not talking about multiple entries ready to be adapted, should the green light be issued. No, we're talking about the 3D conversion!

But is Mortal Engines worth the 3D ticket money, or are you better off donating the extra Quirks to the St. Paul's Energy Project? That's what we're here to determine today, as To 3D or Not To 3D braves the wastes of the Earth and helps you make the right decision. If you're interested in what we thought of the movie, head on over to the official review. Otherwise, it's time to get busy with running through if Mortal Engines makes the 3D grade!

If you don't think motorized cities with the ability to wage war aren't a 3D fit, you're probably not that big of a fan of the format. Mortal Engines has landscapes, locations, and events that are so built for 3D, it would be a disappointment if they weren't offered in such a manner. Not to mention, it's a big spectacle that's meant to help close 2018's box office season in grand fashion, so the extra splash is absolutely warranted.

Only some minor hiccups stop Mortal Engines from being a perfect 3D conversion, but other than that, this is a pretty well planned and executed 3D film. Brightness is where the film really takes its lumps, but other than that, there's some well thought out action in the film's third dimensional enhancements. The practice of 3D conversion started out as taking some serious guff from purists, but a film like Mortal Engines shows just how far it's come after all of these years.

You might not believe it, but it's extremely hard to get a 3D conversion that knows how to properly throw things out at its audience. But considering how much of a technical fanatic producer / writer Peter Jackson is, it's no surprise that Mortal Engines gets this factor absolutely right. It only takes a handful of minutes into the film before you know its serious about the 3D, with massive, flinching objects pushing their way out of the screen. Now take that sensibility, and expand it throughout a film where guns are pointed at faces, cannons fire causing debris to explode, and various chase scenes fly past your face, and you've got a good time.

Complementing the stellar work that the team behind Mortal Engines' 3D conversion did on the "Before The Window" factor is the absolutely gorgeous depth brought to the film's picture. The usual hallmarks are airtight, with characters well separated from their environments, as well as their co-stars. But on top of the spatial reasoning being solid, the depth factor is truly endless, making some scenes even more breathtaking in 3D than in 2D. One scene in Mortal Engines' third act even uses this effect to introduce a new setting in a most fantastic manner.

Hello darkness, our old friend. The brightness factor on Mortal Engines loses a point for the same old problem, no matter where you go. When you put on those grey/black glasses, the picture naturally dims a little bit. In the case of Mortal Engines, it mutes the mostly warmer color palette that the film snuggly find itself colored by. Your mileage may vary in terms of brightness, seeing as it also depends on how well your theater calibrates and maintains its 3D auditoriums. But as it stands, for the presentation we saw, the picture was only slightly dimmer than it was with the glasses off.

Since we've already got our glasses off, let's talk about the blur you might be seeing on the screen. You're going to want to lift your glasses up during Mortal Engines, not only to give your eyes a small break, but also to see what's going on without the aid of polarized lenses. That blur is totally natural, in fact, it's an indicator of how much the image on the screen has been manipulated to present a 3D image. The majority of the film is pretty blurry, with both background and foreground shots getting in on the action. But there are some instances where the picture isn't as blurred as others, giving almost a 2D look to certain aspects of the picture. Thankfully, those moments are few and far between.

Your eyes are important, and if the presentation isn't just right on a 3D movie, you might find them strained during the presentation of a film like Mortal Engines. But much like the majority of the factors covered in our To 3D guide, there's a lot of praise to be had in the audience health factor. The entire product is a smooth experience, with no eye strain or nausea to be had, and that's no small feat with the fast paced action presented on the screen. You're not going to need a steel stomach to watch Mortal Engines in 3D.

Mortal Engines is not only a 3D film well worth the audience's time, it's a film that begs to be seen in IMAX 3D, or any large format offering the same treatment. Its immersive storytelling is severely engaging in 2D, but becomes absolutely electric in the 3D presentation. While the brightness fudges things up a little, it doesn't sink the ship entirely. If you're only going to see it once, see it right and take the 3D journey to futuristic London!

After years of development hell and false starts, Will Smith is finally filming Bad Boys 3. The action movie is currently filming and Smith found an interesting way to keep himself occupied between takes. While filming in a public library, Smith began to autograph DVDs of his old movies, which he admitted was probably vandalism and he shouldn't have done it. Well, the consequences must not have been that bad because he posted a funny video of it online. Check it out.

Will Smith has had a lot of hit movies over the years, with some of his most popular being Independence Day, Men in Black, and Bad Boys. Why, I bet if you walked into your local library and browsed the DVD collection, you would find plenty of Will Smith movies to rent at your leisure. That was the case at the library Smith found himself filming in for Bad Boys 3.

At least one scene in Bad Boys 3 appears to take place at a library, which is about as hardcore of a location you can get for an action movie because learning is badass, kids. Will Smith found a pretty humorous way to keep himself occupied during downtime by autographing Will Smith movies from the DVD section. This even included films he was barely involved in, like the Karate Kid reboot that starred his son, Jaden Smith.

Now, as anybody who has had a library card in their life likely knows, doing something like this is a big no-no. The library isn't too big a fan of people vandalizing their material, which is what Will Smith admits he is doing a few times in the above Facebook video. As for Bad Boys 3, the long-awaited action film finds Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprising their roles as two Miami narcotics detectives with a penchant for getting into big explosive trouble. The film is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with the latest version of the screenplay written by Chris Bremner.
