Ant-Man And The Wasp Drops First Look At Michelle Pfeiffers Janet Van Dyne

Just like how Scott Lang inherited the Ant-Man moniker from Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hope van Dyne has inherited the Wasp from someone else: her mother. In 2015's Ant-Man, we learned that that Janet was lost to the Quantum Realm, but when Ant-Man and the Wasp rolls around this summer, we'll officially meet Janet, who's being played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Nine months after Pfeiffer's casting was announced, we finally have our first look at her as Janet from a new Ant-Man and the Wasp poster.

Avengers: Infinity War may be all the rage right now, but 2018 still has one more MCU entry on the way, and Marvel Studios doesn't want you to forget that. While the first Ant-Man and the Wasp poster followed in its predecessor's footsteps by showing the protagonists insect-sized, the new poster goes for the traditional lineup model, and you can see Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne underneath Hope, both masked and unmasked. It appears that Janet is wearing her own costume, which makes sense given her heroic past. Along with Janet, the poster also features new players like Laurence Fishburne's Bill Foster, Walton Goggins' Sonny Burch and Hannah John-Kamen's Ghost, who is finally shown without her helmet.

After lying to Hope for years by telling her that her mother died in a plane crash, Hank Pym finally revealed the truth to his daughter in Ant-Man. In 1987, Hank and Janet were sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to disarm a Soviet missile while it was in flight. To accomplish that, Janet had to shrink smaller than she'd ever gone before, and while she successfully stopped the missile from hitting its target, she's also been stuck in the Quantum Realm ever since. For decades, Hank believed Janet was gone for good, but when Scott successfully returned from the Quantum Realm after his battle with Yellowjacket, Hank began to wonder if his wife might still be alive. Given Janet's presence in Ant-Man and the Wasp and Evangeline Lilly previously saying that the Quantum Realm will factor heavily into the sequel, this suggests that we'll be taking a trip to this other reality to free Janet from her imprisonment.

Set after Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp will see Scott Lang under house arrest due to siding with Steve Rogers during Civil War. He's trying his best to balance his home life with his Ant-Man responsibilities, but that becomes more complicated when Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne show up to recruit him for another mission, one which will see Scott fighting in the field with Hope by his side as Wasp.

This year Julia Roberts celebrates an illustrious 30-year career as a Hollywood actress that started with her breakout role in 1988's Mystic Pizza. But Roberts became a household name when she starred in the Cinderella story Pretty Woman about a prostitute named Vivian who falls in love with businessman Edward, played by Richard Gere. When the classic rom-com had its Broadway debut over the summer, the throwback musical served as a poignant reminder for Roberts. In her words:

It made me miss Garry [Marshall] more than I could have. I didn't emotionally prepare myself because it seemed like such a separate odd thing and it really wasn't. I was overjoyed for the cast because I think they did a really lovely job but I did leave there with such a bittersweet feeling in my heart. I missed Garry so much.

Garry Marshall was the director of Pretty Woman, and playbook co-writer for the Broadway version with the movie's original screenwriter J.F. Lawton. Marshall died in 2016 at 81 years old, soon after working with Roberts on his last directorial project Mother's Day. The pair also worked together on the rom-coms Runaway Bride and Valentine's Day. In her cover interview for Entertainment Weekly, Roberts recalled a time when Marshall surprised her about the Broadway project her was working on during a lunch at her house.

Garry Marshall left a momentous mark on comedy television and film that started a a writer in '60s with The Dick Van Dyke Show, continued in the '70s and '80s with The Odd Couple, Mork & Mindy, Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days. He then moved over to the director's chair producing hits like Overboard, Beaches and The Princess Diaries movies. Putting perhaps his iconic movie on Broadway was one of the last things he worked on, though he never saw it completely come together in New York City.

The Broadway version of Pretty Woman stars Samantha Barks as Vivian, who was Les Misrables' ponine, and Tony-winning actor Steve Kazee who was previously in the Broadway version of Once. The inclusion of Pretty Woman on Broadway continues a string of musical adaptations of popular romantic comedies such as Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and the upcoming Clueless musical which will arrive late November. Considering Pretty Woman is still one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies ever, it was only a matter of time before Julia Roberts would see another iteration of her most iconic role.

While Julia Roberts began her career as a rom-com actress, she recently said her days with the genre are likely over as she continues to take on dramatic roles. Before the end of 2018, Roberts is starring in an Amazon original series Homecoming from the creator of Mr. Robot and in family drama Ben is Back. It all started with her role in Pretty Woman that wouldn't have put her on the map without director Garry Marshall leading her through its production.

Although we can look back and check out reviews and box office and fan reactions and realize A Quiet Place does work even with its lack of dialogue, especially for people who showed up in theaters, it wasn't always super clear the film was going to come together well. In fact, John Krasinski said in an interview that he and those involved with the movie were hopeful it would work out, but there was one particular moment on set in which it became clear to Krasinski that they were right.

It was actually a particular sign language-based scene featuring Emily Blunt that was filming when Krasinksi felt in his gut A Quiet Place was the real deal. He said:

I remember we were filming a scene where Emily was doing homeschooling with Noah [Jupe], and it was Day Three. And I had written the movie with sign language. So it was that thing of 'Can we pull this off?' But every day that went by was helpful to see it play out, other than theorize that it would be great. But in that scene, two things happened. Emily [Blunt] was obviously amazing, but one of the things is air started coming out of her mouth when she was mouthing the words as she was signing. There was something so beautiful in that. In that moment, I realized you can even communicate with breath, with no voice. That was really beautiful to me.

A Quiet Place is getting plenty of awards consideration around this time and was recently listed as one of the National Board of Reviews 10 Best Movies of 2018. Which means director John Krasinski is back on the circuit to talk about the movie that quietly made a lot of money.

He told Business Insider that it was a scene involving schooling and Emily Blunt and Noah June that really clarified A Quiet Place was working. John Krasinksi is married to Emily Blunt and he's had a lot of nice things to say about his wife during the long months he's spent talking about A Quiet Place and its sequel since its initial release last spring.

This comment, however, takes things to another level, really. He's talking about something Emily Blunt figured out how to do while signing words and mouthing them at the same time that really worked on camera. Just the fact he thought those things about his wife's work on set comes off as really romantic.

This year has been monumental for movies that have come out of nowhere to have staying power at the box office. First there was Black Panther in February. Then, there was A Quiet Place in April. While A Quiet Place didn't gross as much as the aforementioned superhero movie, only pulling in $340.7 million worldwide, it also only had a $17 million budget. So, it's certainly a success for Paramount.

It's not difficult to see why the studio would be pushing A Quiet Place during awards season. People really like it. It has a really solid premise. It's pushing horror movies to the forefront during awards season once more. Even John Krasinksi has a likability factor when he's talking about his movie that's undeniable.

When making the argument that there is a comic book movie bubble that will inevitably burst, people often cite that movies in the genre have a certain sameness to them. While this supposed bubble shows no signs of bursting anytime soon, the genre does benefit when there are new and different approaches to stories. Movies like Thor: Ragnarok, Logan and Wonder Woman each did something a little different that made them feel fresh, new and exciting. Well, if you're looking for a novel and interesting cinematic idea, look no further than Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The director has a wild idea for a Marvel movie that sounds both darkly comedic and very different. Take a look:

This is actually a fun idea and would certainly be different than anything we have seen on the big screen before. Following around regular humans as they deal with the realities of costumed heroes, aliens and magic would be quite interesting. But instead of being serious and taking a Watchmen approach and deconstructing the ethics of vigilantism, this movie could take a humorous tack. I feel like the comedy would have to be somewhat dark as well.

If you knew there were people out there with superpowers and you weren't one of them, that would be a huge bummer right? That's like living in the Harry Potter world and never getting your letter, or living in a galaxy far, far away and not being force sensitive; the universe is really shortchanging you. At least one character would have to be constantly failing trying to get bitten by a radioactive spider, finding some super soldier serum or building his own Iron Man suit.

The concept Jordan Vogt-Roberts pitches on Twitter however, is not entirely unheard of. With decades of comic history, there are actually instances where this type of subject has been broached, with some even tapped for potential adaptation. Last year NBC aired the TV series Powerless, a sitcom that focused on a company that sold products for the average person living in a superheroic world. It's a concept that fans were excited about, but it ended up getting promptly cancelled by NBC.

Then there is Damage Control, this Marvel comics series follows the crew that cleans up after superhero conflicts. There was a comedic series in development at ABC of this property, but the status of that project is unclear. Then there is Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross' Marvels. This limited series comic depicted some of the most famous events in the Marvel comic universe through the eyes of a street-level everyman. While not comedic in tone like the idea Jordan Vogt-Roberts was suggesting, this series is very well regarded and could be a very interesting film if done well.

It seems likely that at some point we will get something along the lines that Jordan Vogt-Roberts was pitching. I have my doubts that such a thing would find its way to theaters. A TV series or limited series for ABC or Disney's upcoming streaming service seems more likely. But as long as audiences still show up for comic book movies, more of them will get made and new and different ideas like this one will have a better chance of getting made.
