The Solo: A Star Wars Story Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Are Saying

It's only been five months since Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, but we already have a new movie set in a galaxy far, far away to tide us over for the summer theatrical season. Like 2016's Rogue One, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a standalone adventure chronicling Han Solo trying to establish his reputation as a smuggler a decade before the events of A New Hope. Solo dealt with a troubled production, as directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller departed during principal photography due to creative differences, and Ron Howard was brought aboard as their replacement. But the final product is only a few weeks away from hitting theaters, and reviews are now in that seem to shine a more mixed light on the latest Star Wars movie compared to its immediate predecessors.

Starting off, CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg gave Solo: A Star Wars Story three out of five stars, saying in his review that while the movie is better than any of the entries from the prequel trilogy, it still turned out to be a mixed bag that had an uneven narrative and a lack of proper stakes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a ricocheting experience of highs and lows, and the end result doesn't inspire any real extreme reaction -- as hard as that might be to grasp in the world of modern blockbuster filmmaking.

Collider's Matt Goldberg also wasn't enamored with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Giving it a C grade, he declared that most of Solo's new characters don't leave much of an impression, and in the end, the movie just feels like another Star Wars movie rather than something exceptional.

Solo is technically a Star Wars movie, but it's one that has set pieces in place of a personality. It's a film whose base level is 'fine'. Despite some unique cinematography, Ron Howard's direction is staid, stolid, and completely without personality.

But some reviewers were more positive towards Solo: A Star Wars Story. Brian Truitt from USA Today felt that Solo did actually do enough to distinguish itself from other Star Wars movies and is actually more successful than Rogue One, hence why it deserved three out of four stars.

While Solo is a Star Wars movie that gambles on not really being a 'Star Wars movie,' it's a winning chapter that only sparingly (though intriguingly) shows its hand in connecting to the bigger universe.

However, The Wrap's Alonso Duralde wasn't as kind towards Solo: A Star Wars Story, saying that it might be the "least epic" Star Wars movie to date and doesn't tell us anything about these familiar characters that we didn't already learn from the original trilogy.

As an intergalactic adventure, it's mostly adequate, with some very successful elements, but if you stripped the Star Wars names and places, it's doubtful that it would spawn much excitement, let alone sequels.

EW's Chris Nashawaty was right in the middle with Solo: A Star Wars Story, awarding it a solid B and noting that those who are looking for a "slightly fuller and more rounded understanding" of Han Solo, then you'll be pleased.

It's the very definition of 'solid' and 'competent.' Nothing more, nothing less.

Finally, Andrew Barker from Variety stated that Solo: A Star Wars Story boasts impressive visuals and a satisfying performance from Alden Ehrenreich, though the movie doesn't take quite enough risks.

Though burdened with a slow start and enough thirsty fan-service to power Comic-Con's Hall H for a decade, it has a kicky, kinetic heist movie at its heart, and its action sequences are machine-tooled spectacles of the first order.

These are just a sampling of the reviews out there, but overall, it looks like that while Solo: A Star Wars Story isn't a bad movie by any means and has numerous enjoyable moments, it doesn't quite measure up to the other Star Wars movies that have been released so far under Disney. While Solo is predicted to make a killing at the box office, we have yet to learn if Lucasfilm will move forward with more Han-centric movies or if this will remain a one-off tale that gives us a little insight into the character's life long before he joined the Rebellion. The critical actions during in will presumably help the studio decide one way or the other.

You can judge Solo: A Star Wars Story for yourself when it's released on May 25. In the meantime, if you're interested in learning what else is coming out this year, head to our 2018 premiere guide.

Kevin Smith Wanted Christian Bale As The DCEUs Batman For One Solid Reason

Kevin Smith Wanted Christian Bale As The DCEUs Batman For One Solid Reason

While superhero movies are everywhere, there are certain characters that carry more iconography and legacy. Chief among them is Batman, as Gotham's Caped Crusader has been portrayed in both live-action and animation. Ben Affleck's is the DCEU's Bruce, debuting only a few years after the completion of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. Affleck's experienced and jaded Bruce Wayne was considered one of the high points of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, although DC superfan and director/writer Kevin Smith was hoping Christian Bale would return to the role. Why? Because Nolan was a producer on Man of Steel, therefore opening the possibility up for a crossover and even a shared universe. As Smith tells it,

It feels like they weren't saying that Ben was Christian Bale, but they were saying like 'oh he's been around for years he's not that guy anymore.' I think I would have preferred it, and this ain't shitting on Affleck, but as a guy who loved the Nolan trilogy when they announced like hey they're making Man of Steel and Chris Nolan's a producer on it, 'I was like "oh fuckk man, so that means like his Batman and his Superman will coexist.' And then ultimately it wound up being Zack Snyder's Superman and Batman instead. I would have preferred the Christian Bale version just as a continuity freak.

Is anyone else's mind blown? While Christopher Nolan's involvement in Man of Steel was definitely exciting at the time, there was no way of knowing that Zack Snyder's Superman film was actually going to be the first entry in another shared universe. As such, the possibility of Christian Bale popping up as Bruce Wayne wasn't at the forefront of most people's minds. That is, except Kevin Smith.

Kevin Smith's comments about the Bale/Affleck debate come from a new episode of his podcast Fatman of Batman. While talking fan questions, Smith revealed how he hoped Christian Bale could continue his tenure as Batman, and therefore crossover with Man of Steel. Ultimately both Bale and Christopher Nolan turned over the mantle of the Dark Knight, making room for Batfleck and all of his sad meme glory.

In his same conversation about Christopher Nolan's involvement in Man of Steel, Kevin Smith also maintained that an organic shared universe like that would have avoided a ton of fan criticism, saying:

And also it would have been like, what does everyone bitch about DC movies doing? Oh, they're trying to be like Marvel and catch up to Marvel. They had it right there. They were like making these fucking Batman movies forever so now we're just going to connect them, so we've got a universe but instead they launched a brand-new universe.

Keeping Christian Bale on as Batman was probably a bit unrealistic, especially after he starred in three movies. And though Ben Affleck has done a great job as the character, it's unclear how long he'll keep on the helm after the less than stellar reviews of Batman v Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad. We'll just have to wait and see.

The next installment in the DCEU is James Wan's Aquaman on December 21st, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Because the Batman from the previous three films is over. They are not going to make any more movies about that Batman. Chris Nolan created a final film that ended the Batman series in which Christian Bale played Batman.

Disneys Aladdin Trailer Is Magical And Mysterious

Disneys Aladdin Trailer Is Magical And Mysterious

Aladdin is one of the most beloved movies from the Disney Renaissance era, so when the Mouse House started digging through its library of animated films to adapt into live action, it was expected that eventually the 1992 hit would be added to the bunch. Sure enough, it was announced in October 2016 that Guy Ritchie would direct a live action Aladdin movie, and two years later, the first trailer for this spellbinding project has finally arrived. Check it out!

Talk about a teaser! Rather than give fans a close look at what's in store for Aladdin, this trailer opted to only give a taste of what happens outside the city of Agrabah, namely the Cave of Wonders, where the lamp containing the powerful Genie rests high above all the other treasures. Kudos to the Aladdin design team, by the way, for making the entrance to the live action Cave of Wonders look so similar to the one we remember so fondly from the animated film.

We can assume that the parrot flying around in the middle of the Aladdin trailer is Iago, though whether this version of the bird talks or not remains to be seen. And we can also spot the villainous Jafar, played by Marwan Kenzari, in the distance thanks to that snake staff he wields. But it's Mena Massoud's Aladdin whose easily seen at the very end, reaching for the lamp. Little does he know what will be unleashed from it.

This trailer certainly does a good job of piquing the interest of the average moviegoer catching this while in the theater, but I doubt I'm alone in wishing we'd gotten just a little more footage to chew on. Among the notable absentees from the preview are Naomi Scott's Jasmine and Will Smith's Genie. I'm especially eager to finally see the latter and find out how his version of the character compares to the one Robin Williams voiced nearly three decades.

From what's been revealed so far about Aladdin, the movie appears to be taking a similar approach as Beauty and the Beast by being a relatively straightforward remake rather than take a lot of creative liberties. In other words, street rat Aladdin is in love with Jasmine, he finds the Genie, is granted three wishes, etc. Along with the previously mentioned players, Aladdin's cast includes Navid Negahban as The Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders and Numan Acar as Hakim.

Aladdin will work its magic in theaters on May 24, 2019, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. In the meantime, don't forget to also look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what other major movies are coming out next year.
