The Type Of Personality Captain Marvel Will Bring To The MCU, According To Brie Larson

The Type Of Personality Captain Marvel Will Bring To The MCU, According To Brie Larson

Thor is noble. Hulk is angry. Spider-Man and Iron Man are sarcastic. Doctor Strange is... well, he's complicated. As Marvel fans look to 2019, they might wonder what role Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will play in the ever-expanding tapestry of heroism that is being crafted at Marvel Studios. So when CinemaBlend visited the Los Angeles set of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's origin story, Captain Marvel, we asked Larson about her hero's personality, and learned:

I think she has an ego, but in a healthy way. She doesn't have an unrealistic expectation of herself. She just owns that she's really good and really skilled, which feels good to play. She also has an incredible sense of humor. Makes fun of herself. Makes fun of other people. Has no issue if someone makes fun of her. So, I will say that this character is probably the most dynamic character that I've ever played. There's the most range. As of now... it's been the most range I've ever played a character from. I've had to go through every emotion possible with her. And a lot of this movie, although it has great comedy in it, there's also real depth to it, and emotion. ... For me it's, like, that's what I want. I want to see complicated female characters. I want to see myself, which is, not a simple person. I'm surprised, myself, constantly by what's happening and what's coming up. So hopefully that's what comes out on screen.

Captain Marvel, the character, brings a lot of new elements to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's arguably the most powerful hero to be introduced in the MCU. Rumor has it she's stronger than Hulk, though how she'll fare against The Mad Titan himself, Thanos, won't be answered until Avengers 4 rolls around.

But Brie Larson also has the joy of playing a fully formed character when Captain Marvel opens. You might not know this yet, but Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's movie will begin with Carol Danvers (Larson) already having her powers, then filling in her backstory over time, instead of taking the traditional rise-to-power arc experienced by Captain America, Doctor Strange and Iron Man.

Many of us are curious how Carol will fit in with all of the aggressive personalities that already exist in the MCU. Some of her attitude was on display in the latest trailer for the superhero epic, which recently dropped. Revisit it here.

We're most excited by the news that Brie Larson believes this will be a wide range of emotions on display for her to play in Captain Marvel. With one foot on our planet and another in the stars, Carol Danvers can explore corners of the MCU we haven't seen before, and that's thrilling.

Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8, preceding the Phase Three-ending Avengers 4, later in the summer. We will have plenty more from Brie Larson on the set of the new movie, so keep it on CinemaBlend.

How Bob Odenkirk Went About Distancing His Incredibles 2 Character From Saul Goodman

How Bob Odenkirk Went About Distancing His Incredibles 2 Character From Saul Goodman

Bob Odenkirk has spent years building up an impressive body of work, but in recent years he's become primarily known for one role: Jimmy McGill a.k.a. Saul Goodman. The actor managed to completely reinvent his career when the character was first introduced on Breaking Bad nine years ago, and that success has continued with his brilliant spin-off series, Better Call Saul. Now the world has completely changed for Odenkirk because of the part, and interestingly it also inspired a key contrasting alteration in the making of Brad Bird's Incredibles 2. Odenkirk recently told me,

I spoke to Brad about it right away. I didn't want him to be too much like Saul Goodman, and the characters I've played in Larry Sanders and stuff. And Brad heard me out, and he was just in the early stages of still developing this character, and as the character developed over time I think he got more upbeat, and more genuine in his excitement for superheroes. I think he kind of shifted him a little and made him... [Catherine Keener] was saying he seems kind of young. Like a kid. And I think that came from the rewriting, and the developing of the character.

Last week, Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener were paired up for interviews during the Los Angeles press day for Incredibles 2, and when I sat down with them my first question was in regard to the collaborative reputation held by Pixar. Knowing the company's history letting different voices be heard in the making of a movie, I asked how the two actors took part in building their roles. In Odenkirk's case, it was really about doing something new and different from the archetype he's become famous for.

In Incredibles 2, Bob Odenkirk voices Winston Deavor, the co-owner of a telecommunications magnate, and the truth is that he is a very different character than Saul Goodman. As fans know, Goodman is a huckster and a con man, willing to lie and cheat to get anything that he wants. Deavor, on the other hand, is what one might call the genuine article. He leads the campaign to try and get the laws against powered vigilantes overturned because he sincerely loves superheroes and everything that they represent. It's absolutely a very different kind of role, but it's great all the same.

You can watch Bob Odenkirk discuss the careful evolution of Winston Deavor in the making of Incredibles 2 by clicking play on the video below!

Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener are two parts of a fantastic ensemble that stars in Incredibles 2, featuring a cast list that includes Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Vowell, Sophia Bush, and even Odenkirk's Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul co-star Jonathan Banks. The movie arrives in theaters on Friday, June 15th, and we'll have plenty more coverage coming your way in the coming days.
