What Wreck-It Ralph 2 Is Really About

What Wreck-It Ralph 2 Is Really About

While the first trailer for Ralph Breaks The Internet was released all the way back in February, and another came out this summer, they didn't exactly provide a lot of story context. We learned that Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) were going to be visiting the internet and getting into a variety of shenanigans, but the preview didn't explain what the film was actually going to be about. As a result, the mystery has persisted for months, but now the story at the heart of the Wreck-It Ralph sequel.

A few weeks back I attended a special press day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California for an inside look at the making of Ralph Breaks The Internet, and it was through a variety of presentations and interviews that I learned the central plot of the new movie. It picks up where the last one left off, with Ralph and Vanellope living comfortably and harmoniously in their respective games -- Fix It Felix and Sugar Rush -- but everything changes when the arcade owner, Mr. Litwak (Ed O'Neill), plugs in a Wi-Fi router. At first the device is deemed totally off limits for all game characters, but we all know that won't really stop our heroes... especially in a time of crisis.

That time of crisis is specifically comes thanks to an incident with the Sugar Rush cabinet, as an over-excited player accidentally breaks one of the steering wheels. Because the manufacturer no longer exists, the only replacement available online costs more than the game makes in a year, Mr. Litwak is forced to make the terrible decision to unplug it. As a result, Vanellope is left homeless, but Ralph is determined to help her, and believes that the answer to their problems rests on the internet -- specifically on the website eBay.

After sneaking into the router and being transported to the World Wide Web -- awed by it's incredible and expansive majesty -- a Search Bar takes them to eBay where they find the auction for the Sugar Rush steering wheel (which is amidst items such as a portrait of a sad kitten and a potato chip shaped like Beyonc). Unfortunately, they don't actually understand how an auction works, and think that it's just a race to say a higher number than the other bidders. As a result, they wind up winning, but owing a handsome sum of $27,001. Ralph and Vanellope learn about this serious mistake, and are told that they have 24 hours to complete the purchase or forfeit the item.

Needing to earn a crazy amount of money quickly, the heroes come into contact with Yesss (Taraji P. Henson) -- the algorithm that exists behind the trendiest website online, BuzzTube. She tells them that the best way to make money on the internet is through the creation of a viral video, and while that puts the characters on a positive path, it's also one full of landmines for Ralph, given how he validates himself through other people.

Ralph Breaks The Internet is described by directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston as a road film that will take Ralph and Vanellope into all aspects of the online experience -- so what's above is really only the set up for the larger story and larger world that the movie is building. It's incredibly exciting -- particularly for those of us who love Wreck-It Ralph -- and we'll have a lot more for you about the new Disney animated film in the weeks and months ahead.

Wreck-It Ralph is the protagonist of the movie series with the same name, Wreck-It Ralph. He is the main antagonist in the game Fix-It Felix, Jr. but is tired and dissatisfied of being the bad guy due to feeling unwanted and hated in his game.

Wreck-It Ralph is the story of the eponymous character; a "bad guy" in the fictional arcade game Fix-It Felix. Tired of playing the villain and desperate to earn the respect of his alarmingly prejudice and elitist co-characters, Ralph sets out on a adventure to find a medal that will (for some reason) finally win him some much desired respect.

X-Men Producer Really Wanted An All-Female Team Movie

X-Men Producer Really Wanted An All-Female Team Movie

Before shared universes and serialized storytelling became commonplace, the superhero genre had its humble beginnings with Bryan Singer's 2000 blockbuster X-Men. And in the nearly two decades since that movie arrived in theaters, superhero flicks have risen to dominate the film industry, with certain installments going so far as to get award nominations in the process. The X-Men franchise is still going strong, although Disney and Fox's impending merger has the potential to change things forever.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has worked on every single installment in the X-Men franchise, although she's poised to step down once Disney takes control of the property. While she's had an impressive career within the property, there's one X-Men movie that Donner never got around to producing: one with an all-female team. As she recently revealed:

I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie. I didnt get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm itll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.

Is anybody else's FOMO going through the roof? It looks like Lauren Shuler Donner had thought out a pitch for an X-Woman movie, but it never actually came to fruition. And in the current climate of the superhero genre, that movie would probably resonate well with audiences. Too bad.

Lauren Shuler Donner's comments to Decider are sure to get a reaction from the generations of X-Men fans out there who are hoping that the femme fatales of the brand might become a larger role in the universe. While Storm, Jean, and Rogue were part of the original trilogy, they didn't always get the spotlight the same way that Wolverine, Professor X, or Magneto did. The same can also be said with the current timeline. Jennifer Lawrence has been given some great material as the new Mystique, but the First Class movies haven't been particularly female-centric.

Of course, that is set to change with Dark Phoenix. The upcoming blockbuster will be largely focused on Sophie Turner's Jean Grey, as she struggles with a dark power that takes control of her. Jennifer Lawrence is also set to reprise her role as Mystique, with Alexandra Shipp returning as Storm. While that movie's been pushed back a number of times, Dark Phoenix's very title shows how much the upcoming blockbuster will revolve around Jean.

While the X-Woman movie never came to fruition at 20th Century Fox, perhaps it's possible within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige has maintained that the mysterious Phase Four will feature more women, so a female X-Men movie doesnt seem out of the question. It could be a great way to bring the mutants into the MCU, while also appealing to calls of more on-screen inclusion.

Dark Phoenix is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 7th, so we have a while to wait before the flick is officially released. In the meantime, check out our full 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

There are seven films in the core X-Men series - not counting the Wolverine and Deadpool spin-offs - directed by four different directors: Bryan Singer, Brett Ratner, Matthew Vaughn, and now Simon Kinberg. "We've also never had a first time director on an X-Men movie," Kinberg goes on. "I really wanted to be as over-prepared as possible.

No, Blumhouse Isnt Already Planning Another Halloween Sequel

No, Blumhouse Isnt Already Planning Another Halloween Sequel

If there is one genre known for its reinvention and penchant for sequels, it's horror. The most famous franchises from the horror world always seem to come back, even if there are years or decades between each new installment. That's certainly the case with with John Carpenter's iconic Halloween, which is approaching its whopping eleventh film in the property. Blumhouse Productions is bringing the new Halloween to theaters, ignoring all of the previous sequels and their narrative implications. But could Blumhouse already be developing another Halloween to follow up this year's addition? The studio recently answered this question on Twitter, Tweeting out:

We don't have a plan, but I love your question.

This response, which has since been deleted by Blumhouse's official Twitter, seems to indicate that the studio is focusing on the current upcoming blockbuster before thinking about the future of the franchise. But since the response has been taken off of Twitter, one has to wonder what Blumhouse has up its sleeve.

Blumhouse deleted Tweet, which comes to us from Comic Book, will likely elicit a mixed reaction for the hardcore fans of the Halloween franchise. The studio's focus on the upcoming sequel is certainly refreshing, and proves how much focus is being put on Jason David Green's canon-defying addition. Blumhouse took a ton of risks with Halloween's story, including the drastically new version of Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode that we'll meet when the highly anticipated film arrives in theaters.

The above tweet's deletion could possibly tease Blumhouse's future with the Halloween franchise. While there might not currently be any plans to continue the property's story, it seems that Blumhouse doesn't want to say never. Taking the tweet down possibly opens up Halloween's future, ensuring the studio doesn't appear unreliable if plans change, and yet another movie gets green-lit.

Anticipation for Halloween has been steadily building since the project was announced, especially with Jamie Lee Curtis returning as OG scream queen Laurie Strode. Things got amped up to 100 when the first Halloween trailer arrived, revealing how truly terrifying Michael Myers will be once he finally returns to Haddonfield in October. The trailer also features the most badass version of Laurie Strode yet; one who has spent the past 40 years preparing for her attacker's eventual return to finish the job he began all those years ago. Reception for Halloween has been at a high, so the film ends up being as great as it looks, it would stand to reason for Blumhouse to possibly continue the story down the line.

Aside from Halloween, Blumhouse has been behind some of the most successful modern horror movies. This includes The Purge franchise, The Conjuring, Don't Breathe, Happy Death Day, and Get Out.You can see the new Halloween on October 19th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Now, rumors are flying that the sequel is a go. Related: Blumhouse Will Make A Sequel To Halloween 2018 If It Performs Well. Why The Meg Should Have Stuck With An R-Rated Cut

Why The Meg Should Have Stuck With An R-Rated Cut

Very few saw The Meg's $44.5 million opening coming. Preliminary estimates pegged the film at an opening closer to $20 million, despite the fact that the film pitching itself to the fan culture that made Sharknado a hit was an obvious key to success. But could it have been a bigger hit in its opening weekend? I certainly think it could have, and it's all down to one particularly big story that's been circulating around the movie over the past week. Director Jon Turteltaub has told folks that there's a bloodier, funnier R-rated cut of The Meg that eventually fell by the wayside, in the name of appealing to a PG-13-sized audience. However, if they'd stayed with that R-rated cut, we might have been looking at a bigger result making the headlines.

With trailers that promised a schlocky, over-the-top experience akin to something you'd see on cable any given weekend, The Meg's PG-13 experience played things too safely. Taking that into account, alongside the self-serious nature The Meg seems to root itself firmly within, it really robbed the film of the sort of movie it's marketing teased it to be. While the finished, theatrical cut of the film has certainly made its fair share of fans (and global dollars), the film's rating does feel like more of a liability than an asset. With all of that in mind, please re-watch the trailer for The Meg that sold us all on the prospect of a big-budget shark fest of carnage, and try to imagine what this would have looked like as an R-rated film.

That trailer promises an all out entertainment experience, with tons of bite and humor. Fine. However, take that version of The Meg and remove the constraints on gore and excitement that a PG-13 blockbuster is usually saddled with. You're left with an uninhibited cut that might deliver a ballsier experience that really goes to the proper extremes a movie such as this requires in order to be truly entertaining. If you're going to make a movie that knowingly wades into the waters of stupid fun, you really do need it to be fun. In the case of The Meg's PG-13 cut, it doesn't go hard enough (in this writer's opinion). And that's not a sentiment that I'm alone in sharing.

Besides Jon Turteltaub's remarks on how an R-rated cut would have been different, we've also got Jason Statham championing the original, more hardcore version of The Meg he supposedly signed on for. Sure, other critics had similar remarks about how this film had a problem with the tone it was trying to nail. That was bound to happen, as this movie had "made for the fans" written all over it. But after hearing The Transporter himself playing up the "radically different" version that was shaped into The Meg's final product, it's truly hard not to want to see this version he's talking up with our own eyes.

If it sold Statham on the project's initial intent, and if director Jon Turteltaub had that much gleeful fun initially creating the film in that image, then why didn't Warner Bros totally steer into that sort of madness? That strategy certainly worked back in 2006, when New Line Cinema released Snakes on a Plane. That film once tried to change its title to something totally different and more serious, prompting star Samuel L. Jackson to reject that move with all the power in his contract. Made for $33 million, the film was memed and talked up all across the internet, turning a simple concept and a ridiculous title into a fan driven, R-rated $62 million hit. For comparison, The Meg was made for $130 million, and has raked in $146 million worldwide through its opening weekend, with some saying that $400 million is the high water mark for the film to break even.

Still, The Meg did overperform domestically this weekend, so in the moment, it can be considered a victory. That said, for the film to truly be a success that breaks even, it's going to have to keep chugging along, chumming the waters for audiences hungry for that last thrill of summer. What better way to make sure the film breaks even than completing an R-rated "Megtactular" cut that could either be re-released to theatrical distributors, or promised to fans who really want to relive the magic on the eventual home video release of the film. Naturally, that'll depend on whether or not Warner Bros believes it's worth the money to finish the sequences dropped in the name of a PG-13 rating. But if they'd kept those sequences in the first place, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Instead, we might have been talking about how The Meg set a new box office record for an August opening weekend. At this point, we'll never know; however if you're curious to see how The Meg turned out in PG-13-O-Vision, you can see the film in theaters now.
