Should Fox Shelve The X-Men And New Mutants Movies?

Should Fox Shelve The X-Men And New Mutants Movies?

After a six month battle between corporate giants, shareholders for both Disney and 21 Century Fox have approved the $71.3 billion purchase plan that gives Disney the bulk of Fox's media empire. While there are still regulatory hurdles that prevent this from being a done deal, it's a major step forward for Disney and even though the ramifications of such a deal on the entertainment industry are wide and uncertain, some fans are just happy that the X-Men will eventually be returning to Marvel Studios. Of course, this begs the question of what this means for Fox's current slate of X-Men films, which have suffered some setbacks over the last few months and it has made some wonder whether the movies should be scrapped altogether.

While there's still the Deadpool franchise and the in-development X-Force, Fox has X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants up to bat. Both are big X-Men movies and both have seen big delays. X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the next (and possibly final) chapter in the main X-Men saga was originally set for a November 2, 2018 release date. The film has since been pushed back to February 14, 2019, due to reshoots that were complicated because of busy actor schedules (according to reports). New Mutants was a bit less smooth than that. The movie was delayed for over a year to August 2, 2019, in order to add whole entire scenes to make the movie more frightening.

However, it's easy for the cynical of us to think that these delays were in some way influenced by the Disney-Fox deal. Pretty much everything Fox has got going on at the moment is up in the air, but the studio obviously has to keep operating until told otherwise. That's a practical business decision but does it make sense to keep moving forward with the X-Men when their ultimate destination in the MCU renders any more movies somewhat fruitless.

Well, let's think about that particular point: does it even matter? I would say that even if the X-Men are MCU-bound, it does not mean that they shouldn't finish out whatever they've got left. There are still fans of this franchise, and it makes sense to give them an actual conclusion -- which is maybe what these reshoots are doing. It's a real bummer note to just end everything after X-Men: Apocalypse, one of the weakest entries in the entire series. Just because these characters might not be sticking around doesn't make their last movie a waste of time. That only happens if the movie is bad.

Plus, what if this turns out to be a really good X-Men movie? What if it's the best in the whole franchise? To not show that movie would only be depriving audiences of a good time at the theater, not to mention all the cast and crew who worked for months to complete it.

On the other hand, not many people were foaming at the mouth to see another adaption of the classic Dark Phoenix storyline. X-Men: The Last Stand notably dropped that ball several years ago and while there's that "now they can get it right" mentality, it's still a story that we've already seen play out in some form. That doesn't mean the whole movie should get thrown away, but anticipation is still muted.

There's an argument to be made that Marvel will want to start fresh with a brand-new set of X-Men if they make the jump to the MCU, but there's no guarantee that would be the case. Marvel could opt to keep the current X-Men cast around and just have them literally cross over from their cinematic universe. If that happens, then Dark Phoenix becomes a pivotal movie that can't be skipped.

In the case of New Mutants, that movie is comparatively much smaller than Dark Phoenix. It's also continuing the trend of stand-alone movies that push boundaries that began with Deadpool. Logan and Deadpool were two of the most interesting superhero films released by the studio, and they both went on to do well with critics and the box office. Fox is on a roll in this department, so of course, we want to see what they do with New Mutants! It's a straight-up superhero horror movie and it deserves to be shown, not collecting dust in a closet. However, New Mutants stand-alone status does make it expendable in the grand scheme of things.

We also need to look at this from a business perspective. It makes no sense why Fox would pull either Dark Phoenix or New Mutants, movies they have spent millions of dollars to make. Movies have gotten buried by studios before, but they typically aren't superhero blockbusters. However, Disney probably doesn't care how much money Fox spent. and if the deal is finalized before Dark Phoenix releases in theaters, then maybe Disney could cut the film to protect creative continuity and say "no skin of my back." There's also the question that if Fox is largely no more when Dark Phoenix releases, who gets the profits from the movie? If the answer is Disney, then they do have an incentive to get Dark Phoenix out there.

Ultimately, even if we do end up with a new team of X-Men in the MCU, I think that Fox should release Dark Phoenix and New Mutants. The Disney deal complicates matters, but if they are able to do so, they should let these characters go out with one last hurrah before the Marvel machine grinds itself a brand-new set of mutants.

Now that we've laid out some of the big points, let us know what you think. Should Fox still release X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants or should they cut their losses and wait to see what Marvel does?

Queen Will Perform At The Academy Awards After All

Queen Will Perform At The Academy Awards After All

Nobody is quite sure what to expect from the Oscars on Sunday, but at least some of the show's entertainment has now been confirmed. While it had previously reported that the the idea of having Queen perform at the Academy Awards this weekend had been scrapped, current Queen front-man Adam Lambert revealed on Twitter today that the band will, in fact, perform this Sunday.

The original report that claimed the Academy was interested in having Queen perform at the Oscars stated that the band would potentially open the show and perform music from Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie nominated for Best Picture which tells the story of the band and its original lead singer, Freddie Mercury.

At the time, it seemed that idea had already been dropped. It's not clear if Queen wasn't interested or if the Academy just changed its mind about having the band play. Now that we know Queen will perform, it seems that either the idea never really died, or whoever killed the idea initially had a change of heart.

How exactly the Oscars was going to handle the portion of the show that wasn't strictly the handing out of awards has been a major question since Kevin Hart stepped down as host of the show and the decision was made to go forward without a host at all.

Normally, the show opens with a movie-themed monologue and also includes a few humorous bits throughout the broadcast, such as Ellen DeGeneres attempting to take a star-studded selfie or Jimmy Kimmel diverting a bus load of tourists to the show.

The host's job is largely to bind the show together and give it all a cohesive feel. Without that role being filled it's been anybody's guess what kind of show we were going to get.

If Queen does in fact open the show, it will certainly set a unique tone for the Oscars, though it has not yet been confirmed if Queen will actually open the Academy Awards or perform at some other point.

It's certainly does go to show exactly how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is looking to change things up. The music that we were expecting to hear on the show, the nominees for Best Original Song, was originally going to be limited to only two of the nominees, and now, while all five songs will be performed, the word is each will only be given 90-seconds, rather than being able to perform the complete song. It seems the time that is being saved is being given over to Queen.

Having Queen perform at the Oscars certainly makes a lot of sense. Bohemian Rhapsody is that rare movie that is both an Oscar contender and a popular movie that did well at the box office. It is exactly the sort of film that the Academy wants to focus on as it continues to try and dig out of the slump that the Oscars are currently in. Ratings for the show have been hitting record lows in recent years as there appears to be a growing disconnect between the movies that get nominated and the movies that the average moviegoer actually goes to see.

Will people actually tune in to see Queen perform at the Oscars? We shall see.

Is Ant-Man 3 Happening? Michael Douglas Gives An Update

Is Ant-Man 3 Happening? Michael Douglas Gives An Update

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a tricky place right now, with much of the studio's plans a complete mystery to the general public. There are just two movies left in the massively successful Phase Three, with almost nothing known about the shared universe after Avengers: Endgame finally arrives in theaters. This includes the fate of franchise like Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and Ant-Man.

Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and the Wasp was the most recent Marvel release, set before the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Thanos' finger snap of death. The director brought another fun, capsulated story that saw Hope Van Dyne become The Wasp, and Hank find Janet in the Quantum Realm. Michael Douglas plays the OG Ant-Man in the franchise, and recently spoke to the possibility of a threequel, saying:

There's been talk [about another Ant-Man]... [but] there's been nothing formal right now that I know of. They always kind of spring it on me. The first time you hear about it, it's already in its third rewrite.

It looks like Michael Douglas is in the dark like the rest of us, regarding the future of the Ant-Man franchise. But given how successful Peyton Reed's first two movies were, it would be surprising if Marvel Studios didn't round it up to a bonafide trilogy.

This update just shows how tight security is over at Marvel Studios. While every blockbuster works hard to keep its secrets, things have gotten all the more intense since Avengers: Infinity War arrived in theaters to devastate moviegoers. In order to keep spoilers to a minimum, Marvel hasn't released Phase Four's schedule, or revealed any upcoming blockbusters other than Spider-Man: Far From Home. As such, plans for the Ant-Man franchise are also not being revealed-- even to the cast.

In his same conversation with ET, Michel Douglas also briefly addressed his possible role in Avengers: Endgame. While Hank Pym has never popped up in an Avengers flick before, the Ant-Man and The Wasp credits scene connected him directly to the events of Infinity War. When asked about Hank's possible appearance in The Russo Brothers' upcoming blockbuster, he said:

You know I can't say a word about that. They have one of those machines that, as soon as you say the word 'Avengers,' a blowgun comes to the side of my neck.

While Michael Douglas may have side stepped questions about his possible Endgame role, it seems logical that Hank Pym might pop up during new highly anticipated sequel. Moviegoers saw Hank, Janet, and Hope fade to dust as a result of Thanos' finger snap of death, leaving Paul Rudd's Ant-Man stranded in the Quantum Realm. Good news: Janet somehow manage to live there for decades, even picking up some abilities along the way. Bad news: we have no idea how, and it doesn't look like Scott is ready to be left in the mysterious setting for any length of time.

The Ant-Man franchise has had a fascinating tenure in theaters, especially after suffering a bit during the development process. Baby Driver director Edgar Wright was originally set to help the origin story, but left due to creative differences with Marvel Studios. While Wright's work was still present in the screenplay, it was a departure that shook the fans and those involved in the project. After all, the director was one of the reasons Paul Rudd signed on to play Scott Lang in the first place.

Ultimately Peyton Reed took over directing duties, and managed to bring a sleeper hit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Ant-Man movies have carved out their own niche pocket of the shared universe, with Scott Lang crossing over and interacting with the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War. While he was noticeably absent from the events of Avengers: Infinity War, we learned he was on house arrest, and therefore couldn't be called upon for the Battle of Wakanda. Too bad, because his tech would have made the epic action sequence all the more exciting.

While he was excluded from Infinity War, it looks like Scott Lang is going to have a significant role in Avengers: Endgame. His appearance at the Avengers HQ ended the first trailer, revealing he'd managed to survive being stranded in the Quantum Realm. He was also shown in the second brief teaser, suiting up alongside Don Cheadle's War Machine. Ant-Man is in the building, and it's clear that we'll be getting plenty of Paul Rudd once The Russo Brothers' blockbuster finally arrives in a few months.

The big question is how exactly Ant-Man will factor into the overarching narrative of the franchise and Endgame's plot. The surviving heroes are going to need all the help they can get, with Scott Lang and Captain Marvel coming to help fill out the titular team. It's unclear if/how the Avengers will attempt to reverse Thanos' finger snap of death, although many fans think the Quantum Realm will factor heavily into it.

The true power of the Quantum Realm hasn't been explored in the first two Ant-Man movies, but it's been known to do a variety of outstanding things. So could time travel be one of them? In the Ant-Man and The Wasp credits scene, Janet warns Scott not to be pulled into a Time Vortex. That seemed to back up the popular fan theory that the survivors will go back in time, and possibly stop Thanos from ever snapping his finger. If the Quantum Realm is the macguffin to make this happen, Ant-Man could have a more important role in Endgame than the fans might have predicted.

As for the future of the Ant-Man franchise, smart money says a threequel is coming. With many of the original Avenger actors coming to the end of their contract with Marvel Studios, the MCU will need to lean on the characters who were brought in later. Prime among them is Ant-Man, especially if he gets a meaty Endgame role, and gets to potentially win over more fans.

Ant-Man and The Wasp is currently streaming on Netflix, and Michael Douglas will hopefully pop up as Hank Pym in Avengers: Endgame on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
