Geoff Johns Updates DC Fans On Green Lantern Corps Movie
The DC Universe is an interesting place. While only a few years and handful of blockbusters in, DC has attempted to jump start the shared universe by throwing as many characters in as possible. Ultimately that's had mixed results, and much of the future of the DC Universe is a mystery to the general public. One of the longest developing projects is Green Lantern Corps, which will bring the force of intergalactic officers to live-action for the first time since the less than stellar Ryan Reynolds movie. DC's Geoff Johns recently stepped down from the head of studio, but will stay involved in the shared universe by writing Green Lantern Corps. He recently updated the fandom on the state of the blockbuster, saying:
I've started I just can't really talk...it's just too early. The truth is I really want to write a great script, and get the script right, and then we'll talk more about it once we get really going. Because we talk about development all the time and people like, development gets out there and leaks. And this is really something again, like Stargirl, is very personal to me. I want to make sure I write the best script I can possibly write, so I need to go away in a cave and write that script and finish it and then come out and go 'okay' and work with the guys and really make sure we've got the best story to tell and the best way into this character. I think we have a lot of things in it that. People know my run from Green Lantern and so they shouldn't be too surprised by seeing what we bring into it.
Given Geoff Johns' history with the Green Lantern franchise, his statement sounds about right. He wrote for Green Lantern's comics for years before eventually stepping into his former role as the President of DC Entertainment. He knows the Corps and the various Lanterns well, and is probably the most qualified person to write the script and bring the The Lanterns back to theaters.
Geoff Johns' comments to Comic Book are sure to excite the many DC fans out there who have been worried about the state of Green Lantern Corps. Because the DC Universe doesn't release full schedule of movies a la the MCU's Phases, previously announced projects don't exactly feel real. Schedule changes, director departures, and audience reaction all affect how the movies are released. But Johns' continued interest in bringing the Emerald Knights to the DC film universe will hopefully get the project off the ground.
While Green Lanterns like Hal Jordan and John Stewart didn't make it into Justice League, there was a quick Lantern cameo in the Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon collaboration. During the flashback of Steppenwolf's last invasion, we see one Green Lantern assisting the world's heroes. The alien ultimately falls in battle, and his ring jets off to its newest owner.
