How Much The Lego Movie 2 Could Make Opening Weekend
In a year full of high profile and anticipated animated sequels, the first to reach theater screens will be The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The brilliantly-titled follow-up to 2014's smash hit The Lego Movie arrives in theaters in February and early tracking is in on the movie. It looks like everything will remain pretty awesome in Bricksburg because the animated sequel is looking at an opening weekend of $55 million.
The early tracking, as reported by Variety, has The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part coming in at up to $55 million for the weekend of February 8-10. A $55 million performance should be enough for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part to easily win the weekend, but it wouldn't quite match the performance of The Lego Movie, which surprised everyone when it opened on the same weekend in 2014 and made $69 million.
The Lego Movie went on to a $257.7 million domestic tally and a whopping $469.2 million worldwide haul. The forecasted $55 million opening weekend would put The Lego Movie 2 more in line with 2017's The Lego Batman Movie, which opened in February of 2017 to $53 million. That spinoff went on to earn $175.7 million domestic and $311.9 million worldwide.
Opening opposite The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part are several films that will all be pulling in a different audience than the animated sequel is targeting. What Men Want, starring Taraji P. Henson and inspired by the 2000 Mel Gibson film What Women Want, also opens on February 8 and is tracking at a solid $25 million, which should be good enough for second place.
That weekend will also see the release another film in the 'Liam Neeson kills people' genre, Cold Pursuit. The R-rated action flick is tracking at around $15 million. There is also the horror film The Prodigy, which is looking at an opening weekend of about $6 million.
While The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is looking like the clear winner in its opening weekend, it only has a couple of weeks in theaters as the only big, animated kids movie. On February 22, another major animated sequel arrives in the form of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. All in all, February looks like a great month for animation fans and parents who want to take their kids to movies they can enjoy too.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part picks up five years after the events of The Lego Movie and not everything is awesome in Bricksburg following the invasion of the Lego Duplo's belonging to Finn's sister. It will be up to Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman and a host of new and returning characters, including a bunch of DC superheroes, to set things right.
