Watch Black Panther's T'Challa Show Up On SNL's Black Jeopardy
Even though Saturday Night Live already aired a Black Panther sketch when Sterling K. Brown hosted a few weeks ago, you know they had to make a return to Wakanda with Chadwick Boseman -- Black Panther himself -- hosting. Even though it's been two months since Black Panther came out, it's just a couple of weeks before Avengers: Infinity War, so it's still topical! In the sketch, T'Challa pays a visit to America to participate on his favorite game show: Black Jeopardy. However, there may be more of a cultural gap between the two nations than anticipated.
Chadwick Boseman hosted Saturday Night Live last night and during his monologue, he lamented the fact that the show had already done a Black Panther themed sketch with Sterling K. Brown. Now the writers only had bad ideas left over like a Wakanda morning talk show called "Wake Up, Wakanda" or "Black Panther has Sex with Leslie Jones." (One guess whose idea that sketch was). However, the writers were able to come up with at least one other good idea for Boseman and it involved dipping back into the well for the recurring sketch Black Jeopardy.
In the sketch, Chadwick Boseman reprises his role as T'Challa, who appears on the game show to...win money, I guess? He doesn't really need it. Either way, the usually prepared T'Challa finds out pretty quickly that he doesn't have all the answers. For example, his answer to "This is the reason your cable bill in your grand mama's name" was to honor her as the foundation as the family. Kenan Thompson's reactions as host Darnell Hayes is pitch perfect and T'Challa's sweet and honest answers are hilarious.
The sketch only gets better as it goes on, with T'Challa finally figuring out the right way to respond by listening to the answers of his fellow contestants (played by Leslie Jones and Chris Redd). In response to what white lady Karen should do with some unseasoned potato salad with raisins that she brought to a barbeque, T'Challa says "Aww hell naw, Karen, keep your bland ass potato salad to yourself!"
Black Jeopardy is typically always a great sketch, and this one was definitely no exception. While it was the best sketch of the night, it isn't the only Black Panther one. Check this sketch from later in the night, in which two white viewers try to get in on the Wakanda salute after a showing of the hit movie.
Saturday Night Live is all new next week with host John Mulaney and musical guest Jack White. The show airs at 11:30 p.m. EST on NBC.
