Kristen Stewart Explains How The Charlie's Angels Reboot Will Be Different From Previous Films
The first Charlie's Angels reboot came out in 2000, when Kristen Stewart was 10 years old. Back then it was one of the few action-comedies with women starring smack in the center of it. Stewart now excitedly joins Elizabeth Banks' new Charlie's Angels (also starring Noami Scott and Ella Balinska), in a time where female-led stories are hotter than ever. Now 28, the actress has already seen a sustainable career, nabbing film lead after film lead, with the Twilightfranchise setting her into high in the public eye. Stewart will see her return to the mainstream with the upcoming Charlie's Angels, which she explains will be a departure from the usually campy feel the franchise is known for. In her words:
It is true I think, it is not maybe everyone's immediate response that it would be, like, something we would have to see again because the one I grew up with was so much fun, and you know, the re-imagining is so grounded and well intentioned and really shows the way women can work together now. It tries to be warm and funny, but it lacks a kitsch element that we have seen before that works so well.
After the iconic '70s television that came before it, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore brought the women detectives into the 21st century in a fun way franchise that didn't take itself too seriously. Since then, the wise-cracking action film has seen some remiss (just look at the James Bond franchise's serious tone), so it makes perfect sense that the Charlie's Angels would find a new tone as well. Kristen Stewart's interview with Entertainment Tonight is a positive indication that director Elizabeth Banks is in tune with how the franchise can be kept alive, and continue to adapt. Ex-angel Lucy Liu even recently commented that she thinks the new franchise would be "a positive result for women", expressing her support.
Kristen Stewart is already hard at work getting in optimal shape for her new role, working on her boxing, with plans to start fighting training soon. She hasn't met the other angels, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska just yet, but hopefully will soon. Months before she was announced to star, Stewart showed her interest in the reboot, loving the idea of telling a story about strong women working together.
With the #MeToo and equal pay conversations are being regularly expressed and movies such as Wonder Woman, Atomic Blonde and Ocean's 8 have drawn audiences, the film has the ability to be much more memorable this time around. The new Charlie's Angels will be released in theaters on September 27, 2019.
