The New Halloween Movie Is Doing Reshoots, And We May Know Why
One genre of film that seems to be having a major moment is horror. Rather than lame slashers or torture porn, new and exciting properties have been introduced by truly visionary directors. We've seen plenty of horror flicks realized as financial and critical successes, many of which come from Blumhouse Productions. Recent hits like Get Out, Don't Breathe, and Happy Death Day have all been hits, and now the company is turning its sights on the quintessential horror classic, Halloween. A sequel will arrive just in time for this year's titular holiday, and new reports indicate that some reshoots are being done for the upcoming project. And it's all about the ending.
One of the biggest challenges to crafting a horror movie is a satisfying conclusion. Plenty of slashers or supernatural horror flicks putter out toward the end, so Blumhouse is reportedly taking extra care with the ending to Halloween. Everyone involved in the project, including the original stars, are very passionate about the franchise, so it makes sense that special attention would be paid to the ending.
Reports of Halloween's reshoots, which come to us from Bloody Disgusting, may initially worry some of the hardcore Halloween fans out there. The pressure is sky high for Blumhouse to deliver a satisfying new chapter for Laurie Strode, and reshoots have been known to sink certain high profile projects. DC has seen this with both Justice League and Suicide Squad, so some cinephiles are easily triggered by the mere mention of reshoots.
Then again, reshoots are very common in high profile projects. The upcoming Halloween movie marks the franchise's 40th anniversary. With original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle returning to their roles for a brand new story, everyone involved is no doubt dissecting and rethinking every frame of the upcoming sequel. So perhaps news of reshoots can be seen as a good thing, as director David Gordon Green and writers Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley seem to have a real respect for the Halloween franchise.
Blumhouse's Halloween is set 40 years after the original movie, and will retcon the myriad sequels out of existence. This allows the filmmakers to craft a truly original story, about a Laurie Strode who never really got over the trauma of Michael Myers' grisly attack. The film will also introduce Laurie's daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak), allowing for three generations of Strode women to move the overall story forward.
Blumhouse Productions has been on a hot streak lately, with new sequels being ordered for some of the most recent horror flicks. Now the pressure is on to deliver something original from their Halloween movie. Luckily, we don't have to wait all that long for the truth to come out.
